Smart Snacking

On those super busy days, oftentimes nourishment is the last thing you think about.  You work until your belly cries out in pain & your blood sugar plummets.  When you hit this wall and you’re unprepared, it’s easy to reach for unhealthy snacks as a quick fix.  If you can work towards stocking the fridge and cabinets with healthy snacks and eating before discomfort sets in, you will ultimately have the energy to be more productive in the long run.

My body craves fat & protein to keep me satisfied between meals.  It is this kind of nourishment that I need to accomplish my daily goals and avoid these blood sugar crashes.  Creamy, raw nut butters are one of my favorite mid meal snacks, usually served alongside a crisp, juicy apple.

There are some super delicious, high quality raw nut butters on the market.  You’ve probably noticed the worthy (but high) price that comes with the careful processing to keep temperatures low and nutrition content high.  Since nuts themselves are a bit pricey, I always recommend buying in bulk online whenever possible.  Nuts Online is a great source for raw & organic.  Buying clubs are really a great way to share the cost of items by the case, getting a great deal without ending up with 25 pounds of nuts in your basement.  Search online to see if there’s one in your area and if not—start one!

Once you’ve sourced a great deal on nuts, I wanted to share my easiest homemade nut butter recipe with you.  Besides saving money, another reason you might love making your own is that you can make it just the way you like it.  For me, that means a hint of sweetness and a dash of salt.  You can play around with the sweetener and salt here or leave them out altogether.  That’s the fun with making your own!  I love this on apples or bananas and as a filling for raw chocolates.  The texture is very silky straight from the food processor with no added oil.  Whip this up, keep it in the fridge for those hunger emergencies & enjoy the rich nourishment!

Brazil-Cashew Butter

makes 1 cup

  • 1 cup raw Brazil nuts
  • 1/4 cup raw cashews
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon coconut crystals or sweetener of choice

Place the Brazil nuts and cashews in the food processor.  Allow the nuts to process for about three minutes.  After this time, the result should be very creamy and smooth.  Add the salt and coconut crystals and process again to combine.  Scrape into a jar.  I like to store it refrigerated for longer shelf life now that the nuts have released their oils.  Enjoy!

    My favourite snack at the moment is….

    Soaked cashews blended into a ‘cream’ with medjool dates, sea salt and lime juice…. perfect with sprouted, dehydrated buckwheat.

    Also home made coconut butter with vanilla extract, cacao powder and lucuma….. perfect for banana-dipping!

    Wow, that sounds really good, and easy to make. My husband and I are going to try a lot of these recipes. I have been trying to juice at least once per day, but am now going to try upping it to twice a day, cut back on beef and sugar. Got myself 3 books on the dangers of sugar. Lots of reading to get done.
