Luminary Profile: Jessica Swift

Meet Jessica Swift—an amazingly talented artist with a new line of whimsical rain boots, colorful iPhone cases (that have recently landed themselves on the shelves of Nordstrom), and a green smoothie habit!

We LOVE her vibrant creativity & her quirky, iconic style.  We think you will love her, too.

If you could share a piece of wisdom or comfort with a younger version of yourself, what would it be?

Oh, I love this question. I would tell my younger self that there’s no need to worry so much and that everything is going to work out exactly as it’s supposed to. I would tell her that sharing her true feelings and telling her story will not only make her feel better and lighter, but it will inspire other people to do the same, and it will help you feel closer to people instead of so far away. I would tell my younger self that she has all the answers that she needs for herself, and all she has to do is listen closely to her heart.

What is the simplest change you’ve made in your life that has had the biggest positive impact?

I stopped eating wheat about 2 years ago, and it changed everything for me. I had terrible eczema on my arms and legs (and even a few small patches on my face at one point!), and my digestion was horrendous. My stomach was upset all the time. I had tried acupuncture, homemade salves and creams, and even a much-dreaded steroid cream, and nothing worked. I decided to stop eating wheat as an experiment, because I thought that might have something to do with my digestion issues, and miracle of all miracles, it worked! My skin cleared up over time, and my digestion is much better now that I avoid wheat. I feel so much better! It was an easy switch, because I never ate a lot of bread or pasta or anything anyway—I think I ate just enough to keep my stomach regularly upset. Now I feel great most days! It’s such a relief.

What foods & practices are essential to your wellbeing?

I start each and every day with a green smoothie—my go-to smoothie is made of banana, avocado, spinach or kale, flax seeds, milk thistle, almond milk, and a bit of protein powder. I also sprinkle raisins on top, and sometimes cacao nibs! I could live on grapes in the summer—they’re my favorite food and make me so happy. Other essentials are vegetarian Indian food (dosas and dal, yum!), rice crackers and hummus, polenta with tomato sauce and peas, miso soup with lots of veggies in the winter, salads with beets and carrots and goat cheese…. I love eating! :) My favorite meals are ones where I can eat it all together out of a big warm bowl.

I also practice yoga several times a week, and I run and lift weights at the gym, too—exercise is a non-negotiable part of my daily routine. I can’t live without it! And yoga is great, because it calms my mind, too, which is over-active most of the time.

Being outdoors is also essential to my well-being—I get my best ideas when I’m out walking through my neighborhood, and I’m totally inspired by nature. There’s nothing that can lift my mood better than a long walk can. I love warm sunny days!

What experiences nourish your soul when you’re feeling depleted?

Waking up without an alarm is my favorite way to nourish myself when I’m feeling depleted—letting my body get as much sleep as it wants always helps me feel more energetic. Reading a book in bed is one way that I like to treat myself when I feel like I need some pampering, and I also like to give myself at-home mud masks! Walking and being outdoors, again, is a great restorer for me—fresh air energizes me and helps my mind settle down and recharge. I also love to curl up on the couch and just watch some bad tv sometimes! Sometimes it’s the best way to turn off my brain and just veg out!

What are you passionate about sharing with the world?

I am passionate about sharing my love for color and art with the world! I think color can have such a big effect on your mood, and art can lift up your heart and your spirits in ways that words often can’t. I want to create work that makes people happy and makes the world a bit of a prettier and nicer place to live. I hope to inspire people to live up to their greatest potential, to not let their fears stop them, and to go for their dreams. I want to help people give themselves permission to live their own extraordinary and unique life. I want to make pretty things that make people feel good! Because the more people who feel good in the world, the happier our planet will be.

Jessica Swift is a full-time artist and surface pattern designer, living the life of her dreams. She believes that our childhood dreams and obsessions are the key to knowing the work we’re meant to do as adults. She remembers creating posters as a kid, filling large bubble letters with vibrant, hand-drawn patterns and decorating every surface she could get her hands on—she was a pattern designer from the start!
And all these years later, Jessica’s childhood fascination with color and pattern continues. From licensed products to objects made in her own studio, her eponymous brand of surface designs and vibrant gift/home products (including her first line of rain boots launched in 2011—her debut in the world or footwear!) is centered around her daring use of color and quirky & fun pattern sense. Her aim? To elicit happiness, play, and light-heartedness in the world through her work.
Jessica grew up in Boulder, Colorado, earned a BFA from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, and currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and two sweet cats.
