With Halloween just around the corner, I don’t think I’m the only one with candy on the brain! Temptations seem to be everywhere I look.

I picked up the most amazing barhi dates at the Santa Cruz farmers’ market and with one bite of their sweet caramel goodness, I was instantly inspired to make my own candy. It’s so comforting to have access to healthier alternatives when holidays roll around—and Halloween is just the beginning. Keep this recipe in your back pocket for the rest of the fall and winter holidays. These are simple to make and absolutely delicious.

Feel free to use any nuts you like or have on hand. You can use medjool dates as well, but note that since they are larger than the barhi variety, you will likely yield a smaller quantity as the chocolate may run out quicker.

Date Nut Bonbons
Makes 2 dozen

24 barhi dates

24 macadamia nuts or nuts of choice

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup maple syrup

1/2 cup raw cacao powder

few drops of vanilla extract

pinch salt

Remove the pits from the dates. Stuff the dates with the nuts and wrap the date around to fully cover the nut. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the coconut oil, maple syrup, cacao powder, vanilla and salt. Whisk until very smooth.

Roll the stuffed dates in the chocolate, one at a time. Remove with a fork and let the excess chocolate drip off. Place the bonbons on a wax paper lined cookie sheet. Once all of the dates are coated, place the cookie sheet in the refrigerator for 1 hour to set the chocolate coating. Store refrigerated until you are ready to serve.

Enjoy!

Cultivating warmth during the Autumn months can do wonders for our well being and help increase immunity. These three simple daily practices help to keep a sense of warmth when the days are cold and crisp.

Light a candle upon rising each morning and before going to sleep.
Beginning and ending the day with candle light reminds us of those most basic, primal source of light-giving warmth: Fire. Although lighting one single candle flame may not provide enough heat to warm an entire house, it will bring simple warmth and sacred light deep into your soul.

Wear a scarf, even on sunny days.
Over the years, I have kept a few scarves on hand to wear around my neck when the weather is cold. Ranging from light scarves for warmer Autumn days to thick and heavy scarves for blustery days, these scarves provide both energetic and physical warmth and protection.

Add spice to your life.
Adding spices to your diet can help warm your body from the inside out. Golden Cashew Chai is the perfect drink to do just that. This recipe will make just over 4 cups. So plan on sharing with your family and friends, or store the extra chai in your fridge to drink throughout the week.

Golden Cashew Chai

1 cup raw organic cashews

5 cups water

3 cinnamon sticks

18 cardamom pods, crushed

1 1/2 tsp diced fresh ginger

1/2 tsp whole cloves

1 tsp turmeric

1/4 tsp black pepper

1 tsp vanilla powder

Place cashews in a bowl and cover with water to soak while you make the chai.

Bring water and spices to a boil on the stove. Simmer on low heat for 30 minutes. Turn off heat and allow the chai to cool.

Strain the water from the soaked cashews. Discard the water and place the cashews in blender with the cooled chai. Blend on high speed until very smooth. Strain through a nut/seed milk bag or for a thicker drink, do not strain.

Warm slightly on the stove, sip slowly, and feel the warmth!

Roses have always been a favorite flower of mine. During my childhood, my mom wore rose oil perfume and the scent and sight of roses have always held a maternal quality for me.

This fall, as the last of the roses begin to bloom, I stand in awe of their beauty and fragrance. They invite me to turn inward, spiraling consciously towards the things that feel warm and comforting, such as wearing cozy slippers on my feet, taking long baths, and having my hands warmed by steamy mugs filled nourishing beverages like this.

This recipe can be made with fall roses harvested right from your own a garden. I hope that you find it to be as deeply nourishing and delicious as I do!

Cardamom Rose Almond Milk
Makes 4 cups

4 cups water

2 tablespoons organic dried rose petals

1 cup raw organic almonds, soaked overnight and rinsed

1/2 tsp organic cardamom powder

sweetener of choice (I use liquid stevia drops)

Bring 4 cups of water to a gentle boil. Add the rose petals and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and set aside until the tea has cooled to room temperature.

Place rose petal tea, almonds, cardamom and sweetener of choice in a high speed blender. Blend until very smooth. Strain through a nut/seed milk bag or, for a thicker drink, do not strain.

Warm slightly on the stove, taking care not to over heat. Pour into large mugs and enjoy!

Sacred Food & Ceremony is a monthly community event with the intention of bringing the sacred back to the dinner table through earth inspired ceremonies and the sharing of pure, organic, plant-based foods. We will sit in sacred space, explore ceremonies with roots in Andean Shamanism and enjoy food focusing on local, seasonal and living cuisine. In a time where many of us are seeking to change our food system, we can gather as a community to create powerful transformations through simple but profound intentions and ceremonies.

Our first event is on September 16th in Santa Cruz, CA. Please visit our Meetup Page for details.

Many of us in the pure food world buy lots of prepared snack bars for easy nourishment when we’re on the go. I know that I do! But with many of them coming in at around $2-$3 a piece, we can find ourselves hungry for a more affordable option! Taking a small amount of time to whip up a batch of homemade bars with bulk ingredients is a simple solution. They’re much easier than you might think and no dehydrator is necessary! Plus, when you create your own bars, you can flavor them to match whatever you’re craving.

This is a really special project to share with your children! The basic bar recipe is nice & sweet, but quite neutral—a beautiful blank canvas ready for your creativity. You can have your kids add handfuls of their favorite dried fruits and raw seeds to create a healthy, homemade bar that they will love—and you will, too!

Basic Vanilla Cashew Bars
Makes 10 bars

2 cups raw cashews

1 cup shredded coconut

3/4 cup pitted dates (make sure they are very fresh & soft)

1/4 cup coconut nectar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

pinch of Himalayan salt

Place the cashews in your food processor fit with the S-blade. Process until finely ground. Add the coconut, dates, coconut nectar, vanilla & salt and process again to combine.

Now have some fun customizing your bars! Gather a mixture of up to 3/4 cup (about 1/4 cup of 3 individual items is a good place to start). Some suggestions:

goji berries

dried mulberries

dried apples, chopped

dried mango, chopped

raisins

cranberries

golden berries

cacao nibs

hemp seeds

sunflower seeds

Add your chosen ingredients to the food processor and pulse to combine. Press into an 8″ square pan lined with wax paper. Cut into 10 equal bars & enjoy!

What flavor combination will you try? Let us know in the comments!

So often I see women attempting to make changes in their lives, and then feeling frustrated, stuck and confused by their own self-sabotaging behavior.

They are deeply committed to cultivating a healthy lifestyle, but their old habits continue to resurface and take over.

Obviously there are a lot of factors at play in this kind of situation, but I’d like to focus today on one of the most common forces that contributes to that dynamic: aggression.

I’m not talking about the way you treat other people. I’m talking about the way you treat yourself.

There is often a harshness in our inner dialogue—an attitude of contempt toward whatever problem is at hand and toward ourselves for having the problem in the first place.

When this harshness is predominant in our psyches, our motivation for change is often rooted in self-judgment. We try to “whip ourselves into shape” or “attack” the issue. A lot of women treat themselves in ways they would never dream of treating others.

The thing is, if you try to aggressively force yourself into a lifestyle change, some other part of you is going to resist and rebel. It sets up an inner war.

Our psyches are like complex ecosystems with all sorts of psychodynamics at play. Aggressive tactics may temporarily repress parts of your being, but in moments of stress or weakness, repressed emotions can resurface and overpower even the best of intentions.

When we let judgment and harshness dominate our inner dialogue, our quality of life plummets. Even if we do achieve our goals, that satisfaction is not likely to last for very long because there is still a war going on inside of us.

There is this myth that if we reach our goal, we will be happy & our inner critic will finally let up. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. The critic will just find new things to attack and new things to be dissatisfied with.

We don’t have a choice about whether negativity will sometimes be part of our inner dialogue, but we do have a choice about how to handle that negativity. We can give our inner bully center stage and full control over our lives, or we can consciously revoke its power… repeatedly, consistently & respectfully.

We can recognize when that harsh, judgmental inner voice is active and choose to respond to it mindfully rather than reactively. We can decide to treat ourselves with love and respect.

Why is this concept of self-love often seen as being so cheesy? I even have moments of cringing when I hear that phrase. What is that about?

I have had so many clients initially roll their eyes at the concept of consciously offering themselves love and acceptance. And yet, when they begin practicing it, they start seeing major changes in their lives.

The thing is, when we start treating ourselves with love and respect, we are more capable of treating others that way. We are far more resourceful and we have way more to give. Rather than being divided against ourselves, we cultivate a new level of coherence and integrity.

If you find your inner critic dominating your inner dialogue, here are a few techniques to try.

Taming Your Inner Critic

Practice accepting yourself exactly as you are. Rather than constantly trying to change your behavior, just practice being mindful. Try to see what underlying needs motivate the behaviors that you hope to change. See if there are other ways you can meet those needs.

Take the spotlight off of your critic. If you notice your inner critic taking over, consciously revoke its power. Slow down. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath and say No. It may help to visualize a strong and wise part of yourself gently taking your critic down off of a stage or off of its soapbox.

Cultivate love and respect toward yourself. How would you treat someone you loved and respected deeply? As often as possible, try treating yourself this way, especially in moments of vulnerability.

She is the founder of Conscious Bites Nutrition and Chocolate for Breakfast. We’ve been so inspired by Sue Ann’s insights into nutrition and the psychology of eating.

If you could share a piece of wisdom or comfort with a younger version of yourself, what would it be?

Wow, this is such a thought-provoking question. For as long as I can remember I have been a chronic over achiever. I now call myself a chronic and “recovering” over achiever. I would tell myself, “Sweetie, slow down, study a little less, play a lot more. Read a book because it makes you laugh or captivates you with delicious words. Write more poetry. Dance.”

What is the simplest change you’ve made in your life that has had the biggest positive impact?

Slowing down and paying attention to the energy leaks in my life. What drains me? Am I saying yes when I should be saying no? What feeds me? Am I spending time with people who deplete my energy or am I cultivating relationships with people who inspire me and make me laugh? Do I have solid boundaries when it comes to family or work responsibilities?

I am making a conscious effort to slow down and live the life of a well-nourished woman. I want to practice what I preach.

What foods & practices are essential to your wellbeing?

I flood my body with nourishing foods on a daily basis: green smoothies, green juices, lots of fruit and fresh vegetables both raw and steamed. I snack on nuts and seeds, cacao nibs and really good chocolate. For exercise, I find things I LOVE to do: a bike ride in the open air, a walk on the C&O canal or through Meadowlark Gardens. I move my body with pleasure and gratitude. EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. I dance.

What experiences nourish your soul when you’re feeling depleted?

I try to stay grounded in self-care so that I don’t become depleted. For me that means: EAT, PLAY, SLEEP.

EAT: I prepare elegantly easy meals and I eat them with pleasure.

PLAY: I take a mini MEcation every single day. This practice can take many forms but it has to be at least twenty minutes and it has to have a playful energy:

a play date in my kitchen

a play date in my garden

a play date with my new set of watercolor paints

SLEEP: I honor my body’s sleep rhythms. For me that means getting to bed at a reasonable hour, no alarm clock, and no caffeine to “jump start” my day.

I also make a concentrated effort to fill my world with wise and wonderful women. I am blessed with deeply nourishing friendships.

What are you passionate about sharing with the world?

I have a delicious dream
not just at a biological level
I believe food heals
the spirit

I believe we have been spending
far too much time
There’s nothing like the flood of easy to digest & assimilate nutrients that a rich green veggie juice can provide. Regardless of how good it tastes or how amazing it feels for our bodies, I have heard (and used) so many excuses as to why it’s impossible to keep up with a juicing practice. From being too busy to clean the juicer to finding juicing expensive and wasteful, there’s plenty of reasons why we might avoid it. I wanted to share some tips & tricks that have allowed me to push the excuses aside and enjoy super healthy green juice everyday, without stress.

Sustainable Juicing Tips

1. Invest in a really good juicer.
I use the Omega Vert and it is worth every penny. Slower speed juicers like this create such a high quality juice that you can actually store it without losing nutrients for up to 72 hours. This means, I am only juicing (and cleaning my juicer) twice a week, but drinking fresh juice all week long. This method completely altered my outlook on juicing after using centrifugal juicers for many years where the juice has to be consumed right away. It’s really been life changing! Also, the pulp comes out very dry and doesn’t feel the least bit wasteful. Even though the juicer is a little expensive upfront, I truly believe you’ll be saving money in the long run with the amount of juice it squeezes out of each veggie & fruit. One note of warning, the juice from the Omega is a little bit pulpy, so I place a fine mesh strainer on the juice cup to catch the pulp. The result is a very smooth & luscious juicing experience. Drink a glass right away and place a couple of full, tightly sealed jars in the refrigerator for the next two days.

2. Juice scraps that would normally be composted.
This saves so much money! I make a lot of kale salads, so I always have kale stems lying around. I love herbs, but often trim the stems. I use only broccoli crowns, so there are times when I have stalks left over. When I make zucchini noodles with a vegetable peeler, I don’t use the seedy insides of the squash. All of these “scraps” which would normally be composted can be turned into freebie juicing materials! With the Omega, I ended up with 10 oz of juice just from 2 bunches of leftover kale stems! For better flavor, I cut this with some milder veggies or green apples, but what an amazing base to start with—for free!

3. Find affordable organic produce sources.
If you’re juicing, I can’t stress the use of organic produce strong enough. You’re creating a concentrate of vitamins and minerals that is very easy for your body to absorb. You absolutely do not want this concentrate to include toxic pesticides that will be just as easily absorbed into your system.

The best place to shop would be your local farmers market! It’s freshest, most affordable & the cucumbers should be unwaxed. My second choice, for when the farmers market is out of season, is Trader Joe’s. They have a great price on English cucumbers (which are unwaxed if they’re wrapped in plastic) bagged lemons and bagged apples. Throw in some celery & your “scraps” and you’ve created an amazingly healthy & delicious organic green juice.

When I’m out and about, I’ll happily grab a green juice from a grocery store or cafe and these will run anywhere from $7-9 for a 16 oz juice. I wanted to see how my home juicing compared, so I did some math after making my juice with produce from Trader Joe’s. After juicing in bulk and crunching the numbers, each 16oz serving ended up costing just about $3.75. That’s quite a savings!

Other super affordable options are CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture shares) or wholesale buying clubs. When I lived in Sarasota, there were multiple produce buying clubs around town. For $20 a week, every member would be given a huge bag full of organic produce. I think it would be an amazing idea to start one just for juicing, ordering cucumbers, celery, apples, beets & leafy greens. With the group buying power, you can reach wholesale minimums and get delivery from a supplier in your area.

One final thought—I’ve known lots of friends who would volunteer with local farms in exchange for free veggies! It doesn’t get cheaper than that!

4. Keep it simple.
We don’t have to be making V8 everyday. Green juice can be as simple as tossing cucumbers and celery in the juicer!

Keep these four points in mind and start to develop a juicing method that works for your personal schedule and budget. Do you ave any tips that have made juicing a sustainable practice for you? Let us know in the comments.

You can skip the apples if you’re avoiding sugars and add in additional cucumbers and celery. I like it both ways!

3 Day Green Juice for 2
(makes 6-16oz juices in the Omega)

6 green apples

3 English cucumbers

2 heads of celery

Kale stems & additional scraps

6 lemons

Cut all ingredients to fit your juicer. Remove the seeds from the apples. Run all ingredients (except for the lemons) through the juicer. Juice the lemons by hand and stir into the juice. Drink a glass and refrigerate the rest in well sealed jars. Cheers!

A pioneer in merging modern women’s spirituality and lifestyle, Sara is committed to helping women tap into their true happiness & desire. Her teachings have touched us deeply and we are honored to share her words with you.

If you could share a piece of wisdom or comfort with a younger version of yourself, what would it be?

This is a great question! I would tell myself not to worry so much. To enjoy my adventures, enjoy myself, enjoy my life. To trust that my path will take me exactly where I want to go and that all the obstacles and heartaches are perfectly a part of that. I’d say, “You’ll be fine. Keep going. Laugh and play more. You’re beautiful; don’t try to hide it. It’s all (more than) okay. I love you so much and I’m so proud of you. Smile!”

What is the simplest change you’ve made in your life that has had the biggest positive impact?

Embracing my sexuality and becoming more of a sex-positive role model. In the past four years I’ve resurrected my sexual self from the background and have brought her to the foreground. She partners with my spiritual self to run my business, my relationships, and my life. What does this look like? Expressing parts of myself that were in hiding during my twenties when I was more of an austere yogini. I’m a beautiful woman and I want to share myself as fully as I can with the world. That is one of the gifts I don’t want to risk not giving. As a result I feel happier, freer, and more powerful than ever before.

What foods & practices are essential to your wellbeing?

Well, this for sure is my specialty! What I absolutely need to help me feel and show up my best is pretty simple for me now. These aspects are such ingrained parts of me and my life that doing them is no longer a “discipline”; and going without them is no longer an option (because I hate feeling like crap). First, I need to get enough sleep. I run best on 8-9 hours. I make this a priority, however I do suffer from insomnia from time to time so I’m also familiar with how the world looks and feels to me when I have much less. I sit at my altar and meditate when I wake up in the morning for a minimum of 30 minutes. This is the bedrock of my life and has been for the past decade. I practice Buddhist meditation, which also involves some element of prayer and devotion. I move everyday—some days that’s (yin or flow) yoga, other days it’s hiking, cardio and weightlifting at the gym, P90X, or a dance class. Having both really dynamic exercise and softer, more restorative practices make me feel energetically balanced, alive, and rested. I eat a really clean diet—hardly any caffeine (aside from my morning mug of mate and a coffee with my boyfriend on Sundays), tons of greens (I average about at least a head of kale a day), no gluten, hardly any grains, no sugar (except for daily doses of dark chocolate). I’ve learned that vegan/vegetarian diet doesn’t work well for me—after having lived that way for almost two decades. Now, at the recommendation of a Taoist nutritionist, I eat high-quality meats. As a gal with a very sensitive digestive system, these are the things that make me feel my best. I also take a lot of baths in the evenings, with Epsom salts and lavender oil. I journal almost everyday before I go to sleep to decompress from the day. I also have a good support system for when I need it—a masseuse, acupuncturist, women’s circle, mentors, teachers, coaches. Last but not least, I self-care with play and fun. Date nights with my boyfriend, a glass of red wine in front of the fire, going out dancing, playing with my niece and nephews….

What experiences nourish your soul when you’re feeling depleted?

All of the above! Plus going on retreat—even if it’s just a morning or a day of more intensive yoga and meditation. I attend a silent, meditation retreat twice a year, or ideally one every season. I don’t know who I’d be or what my life would look like without those retreats. I think I’d be really lost, burned out, unhappy, and disconnected from my heart and what inspires me. If I’m depleted I also unplug for a day or three. I put an autoresponder on my e-mail, tell friends I’m not available for phone calls or texts, and I power down my computer. Then I fill my time with the things that I know I love and help me to feel full. That always involves sleep, yoga, walks outside, time with my boyfriend, lazy time at home for naps/reading/watching chick flicks, cooking good foods (I got a slow cooker this winter and just love it). It’s really the simple things that recharge me the most. Doing less of what drains me. Doing more of what I love. A day filled with this can go a loooong way.

What are you passionate about sharing with the world?

I really want to live the realization that happiness is a daily discipline and a devotion. It’s a moment-to-moment practice that affords us the opportunity to continually choose what will make us feel our best and to live the lives that we most want to live. I’m passionate about debunking the myth of “stress,” “busyness,” and “victim mentality.” We must be the queens of our own lives, sovereign over the choices we make. The answers are within us.

I’m in the trenches with “stress” and “busyness” everyday. And everyday I’m faced with the choice of how I want to live. We can’t expect anyone or anything to save us or make us happy. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are more divine and sublime than most of us take the time to even notice! Our happiness is within us, waiting for us to claim it here and now. Life is sensual, delicious, and ecstatic when we allow it to be. I’m passionate about guiding other women to realize and live this truth in all areas of their lives. Vibrant, vital women inspire everyone: “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” Bliss is our birthright and we’re the only ones who can claim it—so let’s!

I’m often asked about the meals within the raw realm that will satisfy a deep hunger—for those times when a salad just isn’t going to cut it. When my appetite gets like this, I sometimes reach for dehydrated foods like pizzas & wraps—but when you haven’t planned far enough ahead, dehydrating is out of the question.

I love to satisfy my deepest hungers with sprouted seed pâtés on top of greens and sliced tomatoes, or stuffed inside of fresh bell peppers. There are so many flavor variations to experiment with and I never tire of coming up with new combinations.

My latest creation is an Italian inspired pâté that perfectly complements crisp, juicy bell peppers with its tomato, kale & herb blend. Don’t let the long ingredient list fool you; this actually comes together quite fast. Soak your sunflower seeds and sun dried tomatoes in the morning and you will be making this before lunch. When that deep hunger hits, you’ll be so glad that this is waiting for you!

Super Stuffed Peppers

Serves 4-6

For the Stuffing:

1 large clove of garlic

1/2 cup cashews

1/2 cup sun dried tomatoes*, divided

1/4 cup pure water

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 teaspoons oregano

1 teaspoon whole fennel seed

1/4 teaspoon crushed chili pepper

1/4-1/2 teaspoon Himalayan salt (only if your sun dried tomatoes are unsalted)

1 cup sunflower seeds (soaked 4-6 hours, drained & rinsed)

1 heaping cup of chopped kale

1/4 cup chopped basil (well packed)

1/4 cup chopped parsley (well packed)

*Soak the sun dried tomatoes in pure water for 3-4 hours. Measure after soaking.

Place the garlic clove in the food processor and pulse to chop. Add the cashews and 1/4 cup of the sun dried tomatoes to the processor and pulse to create a paste. Add the water, lemon, olive oil, oregano, fennel, chili pepper and salt (if using) to the food processor and process until smooth. Add the sunflower seeds to the processor and pulse to chop the seeds, but allow some texture to remain.

Place the kale in a large bowl and sprinkle very lightly with salt. Massage the kale with your hands until it wilts. Add the basil & parsley to the bowl. Finely chop the remaining 1/4 cup of sun dried tomatoes and add them to the bowl. Scrape the entire mixture from the food processor into the bowl and mix everything very well.

To Serve:

2-3 bell peppers, seeded and cut in half

1 small package of mixed baby greens

Place a small handful of mixed greens inside of each pepper half that you are ready to serve. Top with about 1/2 cup of the stuffing mixture and press down with a spoon to fill the peppers. Serve & enjoy!

If you could share a piece of wisdom or comfort with a younger version of yourself, what would it be?

If I could, I’d go back and have a visit with myself in my 20′s, and tell her quite bluntly: The grass is only greener where you water it. Nothing grows without consistent care and love, and the most important things that we create in life are born through a combination of fierce commitment and mountains of courage. I would tell her to enjoy the exploration and celebrate the potentiality of the twenties, because once fulfillment comes ~ big responsibilities come along with it.

I often wish that I could go back in time to Menarche and midwife myself into womanhood in a RED TENT. I would share the secrets of femininity with my 12 year old self, I would celebrate her opulently, offer her RED gifts, bring the wise women of the community together to massage that ripening body. I would tell my budding female self exactly how to care for and honor the Blood Mysteries and how to FLOW WITH THE MOON in a good, beautiful, and true way. I would share with her/me, the herbs and practices that create balance and enhance feminine power so that she wouldn’t suffer needlessly throughout her early adulthood with cramps and PMS. I would Initiate myself in the most loving and caring way and create a space where the shame of puberty could be brought into the light and washed clean away. I would give myself what I deserved at that precious time in my life but never had.

I would break the spell.

What is the simplest change you’ve made in your life that has had the biggest positive impact?

Commitment. Throughout my early adulthood I had a sense of my own power, my potential, and my purpose, but I had a hard time committing to any one path, place, or community. I was a gypsy traveler.

Moving to Boulder, Colorado 8 years ago changed my life forever. I assumed that of course, I would only be here for a short time to explore and experience, but the mountains have kept me here and have taught me how to steady my passions, grow my inspirations over time, and how to reap the abundant blessings of a life that is rooted in an evolving spiritual community.

I’m beginning to understand now, that the way is within.

What foods & practices are essential to your wellbeing?

I change the way I eat in rhythm with the seasons of the year and the feminine cycles of my body, using my intuition to guide the way. I also have a daily practice that I’ve been doing for over 10 years. {Before I became a mama this was a 3 hour practice, but since my daughter came along it’s reduced down to 30 precious minutes most mornings.}

My daily practice is a combination of Yoga, breathing exercises, self-massage, divination, prayer, and singing sacred songs. I know it sounds like a lot for 30 minutes! But it’s amazing how deep we can go with ourselves when we give just a little time EVERY day to connect with the spirit, clear the mind, and nurture the body.

I give myself time out of time almost every day to honor this precious life, body, and being.

What experiences nourish your soul when you’re feeling depleted?

SLEEP! Going to bed early when I’m feeling down is the best medicine!

Time alone in nature somewhere where I won’t see another human always brings me back home myself. The trees are my friends and fresh air is so rejuvenating. <>Massaging my feet with Shea Butter + therapeutic grade essential oils helps alleviate overwhelm. <>Brewing my own home-made herbal tea blend and adding a teaspoon of ghee calms my nerves.<> Singing ancient sacred songs helps me turn any emotion into devotion!

I also have a funny habit of cooking potatoes when I feel sad, which has a wonderful calming effect.

…And then, more sleep!

Restorative self-care is not just about relaxing. It’s about restoring balance.

Most of us tend to associate self-care with slowing down and resting—returning to our comfort zones. The thing is… if this is the only type of self-care we are practicing, we run the risk of ending up sluggish and stagnant.

Sometimes the kind of self-care we need involves pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones… challenging ourselves… getting uncomfortable & tolerating the discomfort that we often pass through as we try to bring more vitality into our lives.

It doesn’t matter if you eat all nutrient-dense, fresh whole foods. If you aren’t also moving your body and getting your blood & energy flowing, you’re not going to look or feel healthy.

If you are still eating a lot of sugar (or refined carbs which your body processes as sugar), you are likely to end up feeling like a moody, unstable mess.

Do you have a comfort zone in your life that ultimately leads to discomfort? Are there habitual ways you get into unhealthy “comforting” patterns?

It takes discipline to consistently step out of our old, unhealthy comfort zones and embrace new habits. When we make a major lifestyle change like quitting sugar or becoming more physically active, it is hard at first. It feels like a lot of work. It is extremely uncomfortable.

Yet, when we are making disciplined changes that restore balance to our bodies and minds, the initial discomfort passes and we find ourselves drawn to the very things we used to resist. We start craving green juice instead of a latte… yoga or a run instead of mindless, sedentary activities.

When we make it over that initial hill of discomfort, we start to feel the effects of the positive feedback loops we have set in motion. The rewards set in. Our vitality returns and it feels amazing.

Once we remember what real health and vitality feel like, it’s much easier to resist the old habits that lead us back into our old, stagnant slumps.

If you’re ready to expand your comfort zone and make a positive lifestyle change, here are a few tips to make it easier.

Expanding Your Comfort Zone

Clearly identify the old pattern. Write it down. Study it so that you understand how it works… What triggers the unhealthy behavior? What is the short-term gain? What are the long-term effects?

Set yourself up for success. Set realistic, tangible goals that are achievable. Write them down. Post them somewhere visible so that you don’t forget your intentions.

Remind yourself of the rewards. Keep your eyes on the prize. As you push through that initial period of discomfort, find a point of focus that helps you block out the distractions and negative self-talk.

Replace your old habits with new ones. Your old habits probably have specific triggers (i.e. times of day, painful emotions, etc.). Decide in advance how you will handle these triggers and be prepared. If you are making changes in your diet, be sure to have a variety of healthy snacks with you at all times so you aren’t tempted to eat junk.

Get enough sleep. I know this may seem off topic, but sleep is so important. When you don’t get enough sleep, you are more drawn to destructive, quick pick-me-ups like sugar or caffeine. You are also more likely to avoid exercise.

Ask for support and accountability. You are far more likely to be successful when you have someone holding you accountable. Ask a friend to check in with you often or hire a coach to see you through the transition.

Celebrate each step of the way. Take time to pause and acknowledge your progress!

Green juice daily.

Vigorous and aligning yoga, 5 Rhythms dance, a bit of cardio, and some core work. The exact amount of each depends on my work load and hormonal phase, yet I function best mentally and emotionally when I take time for my body daily.

Organizing my creative ideas and visions.

Listening to my body when it comes to food choices. I’m always exploring what works most optimally for me. Basically I keep it whole and seasonal, plus juices and smoothies throughout every season.

Making a big pot of tea brewed with an assortment of immune boosting/body vitalizing/earth loving herbs. This brew will last a few days. And makes my home smell amazing! Some of my fave herbs and goodies to play with: lemon balm, cats claw, pau d’arco, ashwaganda, astragalus, chaga, cinnamon sticks, vanilla bean)

Clean drinking water. I order Mountain Valley Spring Water which comes in awesome 5 gallon glass jugs and fit perfectly in my ceramic dispenser.

Digestive enzymes and a rotation of supplements and superfoods.

Working with various types of body workers to help me relax, realign, or better understand my system.

No matter how tired I am, I floss nightly, clean my face and top it off with facial oils around eyes, face and neck. It started off as a ‘personal ritual challenge’ and has stuck.

A good nights sleep.

What are you passionate about sharing with the world?

I really love this quote by Howard Thurman: “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

I want to encourage people to live from a place of inspiration, imagination, and aliveness. These are the things that fill me up and have saved me throughout life. We can apply these three words to just about everything and anything. I curate experiences for people that bring these things to life and inspire them to be more in tune with their spirit, with the needs of their personal chemistry, and with that part of their being that sparkles. I want women and men to build strength and flexibility in their body and mind so that they can navigate life with an internal quality of surrendered focus and better understand how to shape energy within and around them. I also facilitate workshops and circles specifically for women.

Ways that I do this: Through teaching yoga classes and empowering workshops that encourage/challenge students to feel all of their senses and build confidence in their body and breath, even when discomfort arises. My weekly ‘Yoga Soundscape’ events where phenomenal musicians and artists perform live as I lead an insightful and rejuvenating yoga class. And global adventure yoga retreats where participants step out of their usual perspective and reclaim the joy, health, and magic that is abundantly available to them. Stay tuned for some big surprise projects coming up!

My next exciting retreats are Epic Eden Hot Springs in Arizona May 2-6, and Yoga in the Midnight Sun in Iceland June 30-July 8. Both of them are a glorious taste of delicious magic at it’s best. I’m also teaching at Wanderlust Vermont this year June 21-24! Plus yoga classes just about every day in NYC.

She has inspired thousands of women all over the world with her breakthrough teachings. We are continually inspired by Chameli and we think you will be, too.

If you could share a piece of wisdom or comfort with a younger version of yourself, what would it be?

Get out of your own way, pure magnificence is waiting to run the show. Surrender.

What is the simplest change you’ve made in your life that has had the biggest positive impact?

It was right after the tragedy of 9/11, and I was painfully faced with all the ways that I was not living love in my life.

I have been so blessed in my life. I was born in Norway, the very peak of luxury on this planet when it comes to safety and affluence. I have been studying with the best spiritual teachers, learning so many methods of awakening, techniques to really live and experience a more peaceful and compassionate dimension of myself.

But here I was, in this time of global urgency, taking an honest look at my relationships at the time, and what I saw was power struggles. I saw WARFARE! If I was honest with myself, I saw that I was part of the problem, not the solution. It was not nice; it was painful.

Shortly afterward, I went to a mentor of mine, ShantiMayi. I sat in front of her and I said, I am committed to no longer separate my spiritual life and my day-to-day living. I spoke this commitment outloud, with her as a witness, and I can tell you that nothing ever again has been the same.

Nothing.

We often hear: commitment and freedom are polarities, they are opposites. In my experience, that is not so. At all.

In my experience, commitment has opened up to a greater freedom than I could ever ever have imagined while I was sitting on the fence.

Commitment is the most powerful teacher I have ever met.

My deepest commitment is to find ways to embody the love that I am and to support other women to do the same.

Everything I do arises out of this commitment.

What foods & practices are essential to your wellbeing?

Before I sat down to connect with you, I lit a candle and some incense, and I spread the last withering rose petals from my garden at the feet of my statue of Saraswati,

the Goddess of art and writing and creativity. I created a puja.

Puja is a small ritual of devotion. I like to think of it as small pockets of beauty that I can create in my day. An oasis for the feminine soul.

Puja can be a way to mark transitions. Between the seasons, between work and open time, endings, beginnings. It only takes a few minutes – but I am growing roots in infinity.

And green smoothies. Green smoothies have changed my life.

What experiences nourish your soul when you’re feeling depleted?

Since I travel a lot, I am used to the experience of having a flat battery. The key for me is to not expect anything else. So after a tour, I always schedule into my calendar “do nothing time”. I watch trees. I watch movies. I read books. I sleep and I move very slowly. I have lots and lots of open time.

Every Monday, no matter what, I go to practice in the Women’s Temple. I always feel rejuvenated after Temple.

What are you passionate about sharing with the world?

My passion and mission is to gather women in the timeless Yogini Circle. I am traveling and meeting with women in many different countries. We are also meeting online in Sadhana intensives, and when I am home in Northern California I practice myself in the Women’s Temple. This circle is my satguru, it is my home, it is my sisters, it is my mother and it is my most important teacher.

A Yogini is a word used to describe a feminine spiritual practitioner. The Yogini lineage goes way back for thousands of years, and the practices we explore in the Awakening Women community challenge us to move fluently between the esoteric and the highly practical realms. We are asked to question the concept of a split between spirit and body, between the holy and the mundane. Where is the red dotted line?

The Yogini circle is the bridge across the tormenting schism between spirit and our aching humanness. It rips away the fog, the dusty old concepts, the plastic spiritual food, and invites us to feast at the table with the Goddess herself. Why would I settle for anything less than that, when she is RIGHT HERE. Only a breath away. Not even.

The circle has birthed me into real womanhood, it has given me infinite roots in all directions. I have surrendered into the flow of giving and receiving, giving and receiving, and in that flow I have had a taste of real sisterhood. Trust. Strong, brave, clear, beauty.

The circle reminds me to dance, to shake, to howl. I am ripped open, I am recognized, I am awakened. It stretches me, massages me, slaps me, tickles me, nurses me, pushes me, and it holds me tight, tight, through it all.

The circle has swallowed me, chewed me, digested me, composted me, and spit me out. Re-born, helplessly in love.

The focus of the practices are embodied awakening, embodied love, to be an instrument of awakening in this world.

For real.

As we’ve been running our Cultivating the Sweet Life course over the last few weeks, I have found myself inspired to refine my own self-care & nourishment practices. We’ve been exploring conscious comfort foods and avoiding those foods that just make us feel out of balance.

I’ve been changing my relationship to sugar lately, knowing that a low glycemic diet just works better for me. I find that limiting my sugar intake to simple fruits and small treats works best.

Finding sweet treats that can be satisfying in small amounts and made with sweeteners that don’t cause major blood sugar spikes is how I now indulge when cravings creep in. After making these changes to how I consume desserts, I find that I really need less sweetness to feel the same level of satisfaction that traditional desserts used to deliver.

This week, I was excited to create a Strawberry Shortcake inspired cookie. Strawberry Shortcake is my family’s Easter dessert and though I no longer indulge in that particular version, this fruity, vanilla infused cookie is a beautiful reminder of past celebrations. And yes, having just one can be deeply satisfying.

Strawberry Shortcookies
makes about 2 dozen (depending on your scoop)

1 1/2 cups raw cashews

1 1/2 cups freeze dried strawberries (I found this brand at Whole Foods)

1/2 cup shredded coconut

1/4 cup coconut nectar or liquid sweetener of choice

3 tablespoons coconut oil

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

pinch of Himalayan salt

Place the cashews in the food processor and process until finely ground. Add in the freeze dried strawberries and process again until finely ground. Add in the coconut, coconut nectar, coconut oil, vanilla and salt. Process again until well combined and sticky. Use a small scoop to create round cookies, form into balls with your hands or press into and 8″ pan lined with wax paper. Place the cookies in the freezer for one hour to firm. Remove from the freezer and if you opted for the pan, cut into squares. Thaw 10 minutes before serving. These can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer.

What provides you with sweet satisfaction? Share with us in the comments! We love hearing from you!

If you could share a piece of wisdom or comfort with a younger version of yourself, what would it be?

My nugget of of wisdom for the younger, faster, smarter version of myself would be to dream big and never doubt the impact your work will have on the world at large. All big movements start at the seed level, every forest starts with just one tree. Rise up and claim your position as a leader.

What is the simplest change you’ve made in your life that has had the biggest positive impact?

I’ve learned to forgive and move on. Forgiveness is an important tool for personal growth.

What foods & practices are essential to your wellbeing?

Mmmm I’m vegan so my diet is full of plant-based nutrition. The foods that are essential for my wellbeing include: sauteed kale, arugula salad, my morning smoothie with acai, blueberries and maca topped with my homemade granola. My self care rituals include phone fasting—shutting the phone and electronics off one full day per week. My yoga practice includes dance on the mat and a seated meditation practice with candles, and incense resins. I believe prayer is a powerful way for me to keep connected to the divine and maintain my spiritual fitness, prayer is a regular part of my day.

What experiences nourish your soul when you’re feeling depleted?

I believe self renewal is an ongoing process, we have to engage in self care on a daily basis. So when I start to feel myself moving from center a hot ritual bath with herbs and oils, candle light and silence usually does the trick. After bathing anointing my body with creams. It’s like a total reboot for me.

What are you passionate about sharing with the world?

I’m passionate about supporting women along their wellness journey, helping them reach their health and lifestyle goals and reach their creative edge. I am passionate about supporting women along their journey to motherhood hence my company Mama Glow.
This past Saturday morning I recorded some teachings on dealing with overwhelm, emailed the recording to the women in our course, and then immediately proceeded to drop my laptop and shatter my hard drive.

Needless to say… overwhelm set in.

Apparently I was being tested to see if I could actually practice what I preach.

Once the overwhelm hit, all signs of intelligence and resourcefulness appeared to instantly vanish from my brain. I just went blank.

My inner dialogue became dominated by one repeating loop: I can’t believe I just did that… I can’t believe I just did that… I can’t believe I just did that!

This went on like a broken record until I remembered something I had read that morning by Kate Courageous. She had written about learning to say thank you in the midst of a difficult moment, and I decided to follow her lead.

I stopped fighting the situation and tried consciously welcoming it—offering gratitude for the unknown teachings and blessings it carried. As I began to work with the challenge rather than against it, my nervous system started to calm down.

Then, one step at a time, I began to deal with the situation at hand. I booked an appointment at the Apple store, made myself some tea, and began relaxing into the reality of being without a computer for a few days.

I was forced to take a break from work, and that break facilitated a lot of important insights and experiences. I ended up deepening my yoga practice, spending more quality time with my daughter, and remembering how much I love reading and listening to stories before bed.

As I was falling asleep last night, I listened to this beautiful interview with Sylvia Boorstein. I was so touched by the wisdom and gentleness of her approach to suffering. When in the midst of a difficult experience, Syliva practices saying to herself:

“Sweetheart, you’re in pain. Relax. Take a breath. Lets pay attention to what is happening, and then we’ll figure out what to do.”

When we face our challenges with a strong, open heart, and treat ourselves with kindness and care, our power slowly returns and hidden blessings begin to reveal themselves.

The next time you face a situation that feels overwhelming, I invite you to work with the challenge rather than against it.

5 Strategies for Emerging from Overwhelm

Don’t try to solve the problem while you are in a highly charged, emotional state. This will just keep you stuck in overwhelm.

Focus on calming your nervous system down. Temporarily shift your focus away from the problem. Bring your attention back to something that feels calming and manageable, like making some tea or going for a walk. Take some deep breaths and give yourself permission to relax.

Don’t judge yourself for getting overwhelmed. It’s already painful enough. Don’t compound the issue by criticizing yourself on top of it.

Tend to your immediate needs. Make self-care your first priority. Listen to what your body needs and lovingly tend to your own wellbeing. You might want to step away from the situation, take a nap, do some yoga or talk with a good friend.

Give yourself permission to move slowly. Bring your attention back to the present moment and do one thing at a time, with as much mindfulness as possible.
